Oogavé Introduces All-Natural Agave Sweetened Soda

Agave (pronounced ah-GAH-vay), is best recognized as the plant from which tequila is made. Native to Mexico, the agave plant was prized by the Aztecs as a “gift from the gods,” and for thousands of years agave nectar has been used in food and beverages. This sweet nectar, also known as “honey water,” offers a naturally sweet flavor with many beneficial health properties. Today, agave is enjoyed in its raw form, and also as a sweetener in natural and organic foods and beverages.

Agave is a large, spiky plant that resembles cactus, and is a succulent similar to the Aloe Vera plant. When the agave has grown to 7-10 years old, the leaves of the plant are cut off, revealing the core of the plant (called the "pina"). Agave nectar, which is a “sap-like” substance, is harvested from the pineapple-like core of the agave plant, filtered, then gently heated to break down the plant’s carbohydrates into sugars. What remains is known as “agave nectar,” sometimes called “agave syrup,” which is sweet to the taste, similar to that of honey.

When compared to other sweeteners, agave has a very low-glycemic index. The glycemic index is a measure of the relative impact that foods have on blood sugar. High-glycemic foods that raise blood sugar quickly, such as sugar and corn syrup, which are traditionally used in sodas and snack foods, trigger the release of the hormone insulin. Excessive insulin and chronically high blood sugar and insulin levels are linked to a number of health disorders, including diabetes, weight gain, obesity, high cholesterol and blood pressure. In addition, agave doesn’t give you a “sugar high and crash” feeling like other sweeteners do, leaving the body feeling healthy and satisfied.

Not only is agave absorbed slowly by the body, agave nectar offers many other health benefits, such as trace minerals and inulin fiber. This natural sweetener also triggers insulin response within the body, providing a feeling of fullness and preventing over consumption. Because agave nectar has a high level of fructose, it is far sweeter to the taste than cane sugar or high fructose corn syrup, reducing the amount needed to sweeten food and beverages. In other words, “A little goes a long way.”

Because agave plants thrive with very little cultivation, almost all agave nectar is naturally organic, and grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or chemical fertilizers. Also, as the agave plant has been cherished by the Mexican culture through the ages, the plant is not genetically modified, offering pure, organic agave nectar for all to enjoy.
