Updated Guidelines for Women's Heart Risk

The Heart Risk Guidelines were recently updated by the American Heart Association, and they include some changes for women.

According to the new guidelines, women are now classified in three groups: those at high-risk for heart disease, those at risk, or those with ideal cardiovascular health.

The high-risk category now includes women who have kidney disease, diabetes and other risk factors.

The at risk group now includes those who have been diagnosed with preeclampsia (a pregnancy condition that includes high blood pressure), diabetes during pregnancy, or pregnancy induced hypertension.

The AHA says the changes were made to include these conditions because they could hide something that might not be working properly in the cardiovascular system.
