The Bald Truth

Separate the myths from the facts

Since 80 million people in the United States experience some type of hair loss, it is important to separate the myths from the facts.

Women don't experience hair loss — Actually they do.

Many products can "regrow" hair - Most products on the market can strengthen hair but can not restore hair already lost. Too much brushing causes hair loss — Hair loss is caused by the effects of male hormones, certain diseases and hereditary patterns.

What is true is that there is nothing that will completely stop hair loss and make hair grow.

There are 3 proven things that work for hair loss.

  • 1)Hair transplants can give almost everyone a permanent growing head of hair that replaces the hair they have lost.
  • 2) Propecia is a medication taken orally once a day that slows hair loss progression in over 90% of the male patients that take it.
  • 3) Minoxidil is an over the counter medication applied topically that will help roughly a third of the patients that use it.

Male Pattern Baldness, is not unique to men. It is hereditary, but not limited to the maternal side of the family. It affects 80 million Americans without regard to gender, race or ethnicity. Of this number, 30 million are women. One in four women experience hereditary hair loss. For a small percentage of people the cause isn't hereditary. Changes in hormones, stress, and age can also be influential factors.

This visible medical condition can take a toll on a person's overall quality of life — resulting in a diminished sense of self-esteem and poor self-image. Many put off treatment for hair loss because they don't know who to turn to for or are embarrassed to discuss it with anyone. Few know there are permanent solutions to hair loss.

As a Salt Lake City hair restoration physician and a member of the ISHRS, this last statistic concerns me. That's because like most medical conditions, early detection and intervention are key to treating and preventing future hair loss. In my practice, we take pride in being able to offer patients of the latest advancements in hair restoration surgery and proven medical treatments that can help men and women permanently restore lost or thinning hair.

Today's hair restoration surgery safely and effectively creates natural-looking, permanent results that are virtually undetectable. Gone are the days when visible "plugs" were used. As a specially trained physician I use the latest surgical techniques to restore hair growth in thin or bald areas with the patient's own existing scalp hair. Performed by the right physician, surgical hair restoration can consistently produce natural-looking results.
