CSPI calls on the FDA to ban caramel coloring in foods
Written by Tiffany Wallace, CitiHealth Staff
Two types of caramel coloring that give some sodas and foods their dark color should be banned, says the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI).
The caramel coloring is produced with ammonia and contains two carcinogens. The chemicals have shown to cause cancer in mice and rats.
The CSPI says there are natural alternatives that could give the foods their dark color. Representatives from the beverage industry and the Coca-Cola Company rejected the CSPI’s claims, stating the brown color does form naturally in the cooking process.
The FDA is reviewing the petition.
